Causes of Knee Joint Pain

  1. Trauma is an external factor for knee joint pain. It gives a jerk to the knee joint followed by an inflammation. Frequent trauma and carelessness lead to degeneration.
  2. Degeneration in knee joint is a progressive but irreversible process. It degenerates the bone, the cartilage and the sheath. It takes place due to age, trauma, malnutrition & over weight. As knee is a weight bearing joint , it is highly susceptible to degeneration.
  3. Infection may be internal or external. It may be pathogenic or not. But it gives pain. Inflammatory arthritis, tubercular arthritis are the best examples.
  4. Different types of Arthritis like Rheumatism, Gout, Osteoarthritis etc also give rise to knee joint pain. Also chronic rheumatoid arthritis behave like an “Osteoarthritis knee”.

    1. Bed rest
    2. Icing in acute traum case. Cold treatment subsides the inflammation due to trauma.
    3. Hot fomentation in chronic case. An oil massage and hot fomentation calms down the exaggerated Vata dosha and so as the pain. Pain is the complication of exaggerated Vata dosha.
    4. Nourishing oil fomentation and oil massage in degenerative arthritis case. This is done by Taila dhara (Pizhichil).
    5. Knee cap, Knee support- Doctors at Astang Ayurveda always (Although sometimes, one knee is affected) suggest to put on knee cap bilaterally.
    6. Pultice (Upanaha)- Purchase Upanaha powder from near by Ayurveda medicine shop. Make a hot paste of the same with water and milk in 1:1 ratio. Spread the paste over a sheet and wrap around the knee joint. Keep it for at least three hours. Then wipe it out with hot water.
    7. Knee Exercise:-
      • Sit on a chair and extend and raise the affected leg putting on five kg weight on the ankle joint. Repeat the processs 10 times within three repeatations, thrice daily.
      • Cycle in air slleping on the back.
      • Extend and dorsiflex the both feet.
    8. Follow arthritis diet
